...the gearbox needs replacing? I have recently had a diagnostic test on my mercedes a class auto as the "f" was constantly displayed which I was told meant the gearbox and/or ecu would need raplacing or it might need just a reset. I was told today that one valve (out of four) was under alot of pressure (98% as opposed to the other 3 which were at 9%) and that this would mean the gearbox needs to be replaced and it will cost £1400. Is this true? Or can this be an electrical fault or be fixed in any other way other than replacing the gearbox? Thanks

The shift valve is usually the value that causes problems, the control unit is also prone to failure as it is inside the gearbox, control units are roughly £1000 and have to coded to the chassis, this is done in germany and then sent over.
The control units can be repaired for £300ish, then theres labour for removing and refitting, oil, filter magnet, pan and gaskets so still about £1000.
