Default Is it possible to use Regular (87 octane) fuel in a 2008 Mercedes-Benz R350?

While my mom usually uses a combination of Midgrade (89) and Premium (91-93), she is pondering using Regular due to rising gas prices. Since my dad leases our R-Class and gets a very good deal on it, we cannot really switch to a brand other than Mercedes as he works for them and would have a greater down payment with another brand. If you have any suggestions, please do not hesitate to answer. Thank you!

If you want the car to run like crap!

You could put regular but it would start knocking, and lack power.
You well get less Fuel Efficiency meaning it would cost more in the long run to fill up.

What does the Owners Manual say? If the engine is high performance, it will required high (91) octane gas. If the engine requires high octane gas and you use 87 octane, the engine may start "pinging" especially when under load or high acceleration. If the "pinging" is bad enough, it could cause piston and/or cylinder problems. Also it will result in less MPG.
